Sue Neuen retired in 2016 after serving as Executive Director of Science@OC for 14 years, carrying out the mission to inspire middle school-age students in Orange County, California, to excel in science and explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. Under her leadership, Science@OC grew to impact one-third of the 113,700 middle school students in science programs in Orange County, CA. Building on her experience, Sue co-authored a book, “Writing Science Right!” In 2017.
As a consultant and faculty member of the Smithsonian Institute’s Science Education Center, Sue has written curriculum and facilitated district-level strategic planning for science programs across the United States. She is an intern speaker (Mexico, Chile, Canada, Netherlands, Poland, and Australia) on “Global Competitiveness and the 21st Century Workforce. " Sue served on the Board of Directors for MANCEF, the Micro, Nano, and Emerging Technologies Commercialization Education Foundation.
Before moving to California in 2002, Sue served as the Executive Director of The Einstein Project in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She guided The Einstein Project through the transition district program to a successful, nationally recognized non-profit organization providing Science Education to over 70 school districts during her tenure there.
MUSICIAN, COMPOSER
Sue has always been torn between her love for music and her passion for science. Her love of music led her to a Bachelor of Music undergraduate degree. Upon graduating, she conducted church choirs, performed lead roles in Broadway musicals, and was a church organist. She conducted community choral ensembles in Green Bay and produced/directed many community musical productions. For 14 years, she shared her musical talent as a member of the Hour of Power telecasts from Garden Grove, CA. Sue's musical compositions include a children's musical and church anthems published by Hal Leonard Inc. in 2018.
MOTHER, FRIEND, PATRIOT, AND CHRISTIAN
Sue is the mother of two children and the grandmother of five wonderful grandchildren. Family is essential, as is passing on family values and traditions. In 2017, she and her husband, Don Neuen, retired to a home on the water in peaceful Oshkosh, WI.
One of Sue's aspirations is to be a better friend to all, dedicating time to sharing, caring for, and celebrating. She is a true American patriot who loves the USA, has been elected to public office, and has lived with others who served on government task forces.
Sue has a solid Christian faith and feels that God has blessed Don and her so they can, in turn, help others. Her personal aim is to live the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The Keepers of the Mitten organization aligns with her faith and life priorities.
